MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES

i. Affiliate Member

Affiliate members are those who have either not completed a professional training in somatic psychotherapy or who are not currently practicing as somatic psychotherapists and who wish to involve themselves in the activities of the AASP. It should be noted that Affiliates are not permitted to practise as somatic psychotherapists nor gain indemnity insurance under the AASP banner.

ii. Training Associate

Training Associates are those members who are currently undertaking a relevant training programme that can lead to membership of the AASP and who have not yet completed the full training programme including 10 hours of approved supervised practice aligned to 40 approved client contact hours.
Please note that if you are an AASP member and you are seeing clients while training you must have indemnity insurance and must be in approved weekly supervision. Even though this supervision during training cannot be counted as part of the 75 hours required for Accreditation with AASP as a Clinical member it can be counted for the purpose of being accepted onto the PACFA Provisional Register.

iii. Associate Member

Associate members are those practitioners who have completed:

  • 540 hours (minimum) professional training in a course deemed relevant as a
       pathway to Accredited Membership of the association,
  • a minimum of 10 hours of approved supervision aligned to 40 client contact hours,
  • at least 100 hours of personal psychotherapy, and
  • the assessment process for Associate Members.
Associate members must also:
  • accumulate a total of 50 hours of approved supervision aligned to 200 approved client contact hours required to become Provisional members on the PACFA Register.  These hours may be accumulated with private psychotherapy clients and/or with clients in an approved setting.
  • In a parallel process, Associates may accumulate 75 hours of weekly supervision of private psychotherapy clients in order to be eligible for accreditation as a Clinical member of AASP.
  • until accreditation remain in at least fortnightly supervision following those initial 75 hours,
  • for at least the next five years, include each year, a stint of at least 10 hours of weekly supervision.

iv. Provisional Clinical Member
Provisional Clinical Members are those practitioners who have completed all the requirements of Associate membership and additionally:

  • a minimum of 50 hours of approved supervision aligned to 200 approved client contact hours
  • at least 150 hours of personal psychotherapy, and
  • have been accepted as a Provisional Member on the PACFA /ARCAP Register

NOTE: For approval, the 50 client contact hours required for this level of membership may be of clients in private practice but may also include clients in one on one contact in other settings so long as those settings allow you to practise the skills in which you have been trained.
To be approved, the supervision of this work with these clients, must be supervision with an experienced psychotherapist as per AASP requirements

v. Clinical Member
Accredited Clinical members are those practitioners who have completed:

  • 540 hours (minimum) professional training in somatic psychotherapy,
  • at least 75 hours (minimum) of post-training weekly supervision 
  • 200 hours of personal psychotherapy, and
  • the accreditation process for Clinical Members. Accreditation requirements
